Did you end up losing a tooth because a hockey game got too rough? Chip a tooth during a fall? While we never want to be in an emergency dental situation, unfortunately, emergencies do happen. Often, the first instinct can be to panic, but our team of professionals serving Surrey and Langley have you covered.

When To  Book An Emergency Dentist Visit

Experiencing pain? It can be tough to judge when to book an emergency dentist appointment. It is easy to be dismissive of the pain you’re experiencing, but the sooner you see a dentist in the event of an emergency, the better.

Emergencies can be scary, but every patient who walks through our doors at Flagship Dental receives specialized care and attention. Here are some ways you can judge whether a visit can wait until your next dental appointment or if you need to see an emergency dentist immediately.

  • Toothaches: The pain you are experiencing is difficult to ignore and prevents you from doing daily activities.
  • Lots of blood: If there is excessive bleeding in your mouth, it may be a potential emergency. Connect with us and we’ll guide you through any next steps based on your situation.
  • Lost teeth: Losing a tooth warrants a visit to an emergency dentist. The sooner you see a dentist after losing a tooth, the higher probability you have of it being reattached.
  • Loose teeth: If you notice any wobbly teeth, it may be indicative of a larger problem that warrants an emergency dentist’s attention.
  • Abnormalities in your mouth: Find a new bump or pus in your mouth when you look in the mirror? It may be an abscess or infection – don’t wait to seek emergency dental treatment.

If You Need To Reach An Emergency Dentist, Call Us Right Away At 604-576-8228.

We’re happy to assist our patients with urgent dental emergencies after business hours. An additional emergency phone number is available after hours when you call our office.

Note: any life-threatening injuries require immediate attention from a healthcare professional. Call 911 or head to the emergency room immediately if you have a broken jaw or bleeding that won’t stop.

How to Deal With a Dental Emergency

Once you’ve booked your emergency dental appointment, it’s important to minimize your pain and discomfort as you head to our dental clinic. Here are some ways you can help soothe any pain you may be experiencing.

  • Remain calm: While it can be difficult to fight the urge to panic, taking a deep breath will help you thoughtfully assess your situation.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.  Doing so will help relieve an inflamed area and clear your mouth of any particles that may be the source of the pain.
  • Over-the-counter medication: Taking an over-the-counter medication like Tylenol or Advil will temporarily help you manage your pain symptoms.
  • Cold compresses and gauze: By applying a cold compress on your face near the affected area, you’ll be able to numb it and reduce swelling. You can also use gauze to apply pressure to the area of your mouth that is bleeding.
  • Hang on to any lost teeth: Your dentist may be able to reinsert a lost tooth if you see them immediately. If a dental filling or crown has fallen out, hang out to those if you can as well.

What Happens During Your Dental Emergency Appointment

When you see your dentist for an emergency appointment, explain what happened and what kind of pain you’re experiencing. It’s good to be as detailed as possible so we can provide the best care for your situation. If you are aware of any allergies you have to medication, be sure to mention that as well.

Your dentist will take steps to clean the affected area and minimize pain before proceeding with any necessary treatment. We will brief you on any necessary next steps, which could include: repairing a tooth, extracting it, or prescribing antibiotics if there is an infection. Above all, we’re here for you at every step of an emergency situation, and want our patients to feel as safe and comfortable during the appointment as possible.

After your emergency appointment, we will give you instructions on how to care for your teeth and the affected area at home. We will also schedule a follow-up appointment to check in on any healing process.
