About Treatments for Bad Breath

We all don’t want to be that person whose breath stinks, but it’s more common than you may think! Halitosis, an oral condition that causes bad breath, is a problem that is easily treated. There are also ways to prevent it, so you won’t ever have to worry about having bad breath in the future.

At Flagship Dental, your oral health is our priority. There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to dental care, and we treat every patient with specialized attention and care. Since dental health looks different for everyone, we want you to feel safe and comfortable coming to us for an appointment.

About Our Exams

Since your mouth houses several sources of bacteria, bad breath can also be caused by several factors. Here are some of the main causes of halitosis.

  • Specific food items: The foods you eat can definitely impact your oral health. Foods with large amounts of garlic and onions can affect your breath.
  • Poor oral hygiene: If you don’t brush and floss regularly, or miss out on regular dental checkups, food will continue to build up in your mouth and teeth. In addition to forming plaque and tartar, that buildup can also create an unpleasant odor in your mouth.
  • Gum disease (periodontal disease): A symptom of periodontal disease is foul-smelling breath and experiencing an unpleasant taste in your mouth.
  • Dry mouth (xerostomia): Your mouth produces saliva to cleanse itself and remove any food particles that remain after a meal. If you’re suffering from dry mouth, the decrease in saliva production means that self-cleaning process can’t happen, and bad breath occurs as a result.
  • Using tobacco products: Cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco not only puts you at risk for several diseases and health conditions, but also contribute to bad breath.

FAQs About Halitosis

Halitosis is nothing to be ashamed of, and we want to make sure you look and feel your best by eliminating any unwanted odors during your dental appointment. Here are some questions you may have about bad breath treatments.

How do you treat bad breath?

It depends on what may be causing it. At your regular dental checkup, your dentist will try to identify the underlying source of the odor and give you tips for keeping bad breath at bay, such as gargling an antimicrobial mouth rinse.

How can I prevent bad breath?

In addition to brushing and flossing regularly, don’t forget to clean your tongue, cheeks, and the roof of your mouth. Most of the bacteria that causes halitosis lives on your tongue, so brushing or scraping your tongue can help get rid of it.
